Born in Picardy around 1455, Jacques Lefèvre d’Étaples became a prominent humanist, educational reformer and editor of philosophical and biblical works. He travelled to Italy a few times, met Marsilio Ficino and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, and returned to France filled with the spirit of the Italian Renaissance. His French translation of the New Testament was published in 1523, that of the complete Bible in 1530. He was condemned by the Theological Faculty of Paris, which regarded him an advocate of the Lutheran ‘heresy’ in France.
