The Hand of the Philosopher features symbols that stand for (al)chemical substances: crown = salpeter; star = vitriol; sun = salammoniac; lantarn = alum; key = salt; fish = mercury; fire = sulphur. Those who did not understand the meaning of these secret symbols could never become true alchemists.
