The Works of Jacob Behmen, the Teutonic Theosopher, ed. William Law,  1764-1781

This engraving captures Böhme’s complex cosmology in a single image: above we see the divine world, symbolized by the hexagram featuring the Hebrew word ‘Adonai’ or Lord; below the universe of which man is a part; emanating from this universe is a dark globe on the right and a light globe on the left. In between there is a symbol devised by Böhme himself: the ‘wonder-eye of eternity’, or the ‘philosophical globe’: two semi-circles that should be imagined as three-dimensional, as an eye or globe perceiving everything. Jacob Böhme (1575-1624) was Germany’s most influential mystic and original thinker of the 17th century. Only one of his works was published in his lifetime; he was banned from publishing when he came into conflict with the established church. The engraving was made by Dionysius Andreas Freher (1649-1728), a follower of Böhme and one of the artists to have been inspired by his thought.
