David Joris 'TWonder-boeck' 1584
David Joris (1501-1556) started out as an Anabaptist, i.e. someone opposed to infant baptism, as he and many others felt that baptism should be a conscious and mature decision. Later he evolved into a prophet with his own following, who preached spiritual rebirth. Inevitably he was hated and persecuted by the authorities. ’t Wonderboeck is regarded as his chief work. Joris himself provided the original designs for this work, which were first printed as woodcuts, in later editions as engravings. This image is also about spiritual rebirth. The winged and crowned female figure, brandishing a sword in her left hand and a heart in her right hand, is the Invisible Church or Bride of Christ (the medallion she wears on her chest appropriately features the pelican, a symbol of Christ).
