The Works of Jacob Behmen, the Teutonic Theosopher, ed. William Law,  1764-1781

The philosophical work of Jacob Böhme inspired numerous artists in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This engraving is the only one he designed himself and was included in his work Forty Questions of the Soul. The two semi-circles represent two parts of a globe, and can also be said to stand for the creative conflict between darkness and light. There is no light without darkness, and the constant battle between the two is present in everything: in nature and in mankind. Böhme acknowledged the reality of darkness but stressed that man had the power to overcome darkness and turn to the divine light. Jacob Böhme (1575-1624) was Germany’s most influential mystic and original thinker of the 17th century. Only one of his works was published in his lifetime; he was banned from publishing when he came into conflict with the established church.
