This lavishly illustrated catalogue was published on the occasion of the travelling exhibition Light in Darkness. The Mystical Philosophy of Jacob Böhme, which first opened in Drsden in August 2017 and was also on show at the Embassy of the Free Mind in Amsterdam.from 14 December 2019 to 14 March 2020. The exhibition catalogue sheds light on Böhme’s life and offers insight into Böhme’s remarkably original thought by focusing on the themes of Creation, Nature, Cosmos, Darkness, Fall, Light, Rebirth, Imagination and Freedom.

Jacob Böhme (1575-1624) is one of the most important German thinkers. His writings have influenced literature, philosophy, religion and art beyond national borders from his time up to the present. One hundred years after the beginning of the Protestant Reformation - on the eve of the Thirty Years’ War - Böhme wanted to give voice to the need for a deep spiritual and philosophical renewal. In a series of exhibitions - in Dresden, Coventry, Amsterdam and Wrocław - the Dresden State Art Collections recall this unconventional thinker, whose ideas about the relationship between science and belief, humanity and nature, woman and man are today more current than ever.
