The Works of Jacob Behmen, the Teutonic Theosopher, ed. William Law,  1764-1781

This is the opening image of the third of three pop-up tables illustrating Böhme’s ideas on the origin, fall and regeneration of man. They were made by Dionysius Andreas Freher (1649-1728), a follower of Böhme and one of the artists to have been inspired by his thought. It shows man reborn in spirit, soul and body, placed in a paradisical setting reminiscent of a formal garden. The name Sophia (or Divine Wisdom) is written across the two triangles on his breast. To Böhme, Sophia is a divine mirror and active principle reaching out to creation and man. Jacob Böhme (1575-1624) was Germany’s most influential mystic and original thinker of the 17th century. Only one of his works was published in his lifetime; he was banned from publishing when he came into conflict with the established church.
