Hermetische Geschriften

Authors: Roelof van den Broek & Gilles Quispel

This edition incorporates in a Dutch translation virtually all works that were attributed in the Graeco-Roman world to Hermes Trismegistus, a mythic teacher who was supposed to have lived in Ancient Egypt. These works, which date from the first centuries CE, offer a religious-philosophical interpretation of reality, one in which God, the cosmos and man are closely related to each other.

Not only long familiar hermetic works  like the Corpus Hermeticum and the Asclepiushave been included, but also texts like The Discourse on the Eighth and Ninth and the Definitions of Hermes Trismegistus, which only resurfaced in the second half of the twentieth century and have greatly enriched our knowledge of hermetism. The translations, by Gilles Quispel (1916-2006) and Roelof van den Broek (1931), were previously published in three separate volumes, with explanatory introductions and notes. For the present single-volume edition, van den Broek thoroughly revised the translation in a number of cases and adapted the introductions and notes in accordance with the present state of research.
