500 Years of Gnosis in Europe
Exhibition of Printed Books and Manuscripts from the Gnostic Tradition

Author: Carlos Gilly

In 1993, less than a decade after glasnost (‘openness’) was introduced in Russia, an exhibition showing Western European mystical, alchemical and Hermetic texts and their Russian counterparts opened in Moscow. It was the first time after many years of suppression that these works were presented to the Russian public. The exhibition, which drew many visitors and also travelled to St Petersburg, was the fruit of an intensive collaboration between the M.I. Rudomino Russian State Library for Foreign Literature in Moscow and the EFM’s Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica collection.

The illustrated bi-lingual catalogue (Russian and English) presents manuscripts and printed books ranging from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries. They included works by Hermes Trismegistus, Paracelsus, Jacob Böhme (who had a keen following in Russia), Robert Fludd and Michael Maier. The Rosicrucian Geheime Figuren der Rosenkreuzer is also featured in the exhibition: most of the Russian texts date from the eighteenth century and were produced as translations by and for Russian Freemasons.

Keywords: Russian Freemasonry, mysticism, early printed books and manuscripts.
