Пути Гермеса - Ways of Hermes
The potted version of two major exhibitions in Florence: Marsilio Ficino and the Return of Hermes Trismegistus (1999) and Venice: Magic, Alchemy, Science, 15th-18th Centuries (2002), this small exhibition guide highlights 80 printed works and manuscripts documenting the presence of Hermes Trismegistus in the West. Before the rediscovery of the Corpus Hermeticum, translated by Marsilio Ficino on the basis of a codex owned by Cosimo de Medici, the only major philosophical text attributed to the legendary sage was Asclepius. This work with its magical passages caused the fury of the Church Father Augustine, who condemned Hermes Trismegistus as the ‘mouthpiece of the devil’.
Keywords: Hermetic philosophy, magic, medicine, astrology.
