The silent language
Symbols of Hermetic Philosophy

Author: Adam McLean

The Silent Language is the catalogue of an exhibition held in the BPH on the occasion of two summer courses offered by Amsterdam University in the summer of 1994: ‘Gnosis and Hermeticism from Antiquity to Modern Times’ and ‘Symbolism in Art: in search of a definition’. Adam McLean of the renowned Alchemy website explored in this exhibition the wealth of symbolical material in alchemical works by placing key items from the collection in a historical perspective. Alchemical images discussed by Adam McLean include 'runaway bestsellers' like the Rosarium philosophorum (1550), Khunrath’s Amphitheatrum sapientiae aeternae (1608) and Maier’s Atalanta fugiens (1618), but also less well known or surprising works such as Coender van Helpen’s Escalier des sages (1689) or Suso’s Das Buch genannt Seuse (1482). The catalogue has long been out of print and is now offered as an e-book for the first time.
