Beauty as the Imprint of the Cosmos
An exhibition of graphic art and printed books

Authors: José Bouman, Reinhold Fäth, Cis van Heertum

‘Beauty is the imprint of the cosmos … in a physical earthly being’, according to Rudolf Steiner. This statement explains why art represented a higher dimension for some artists working in the early 20th century. Around this time, theosophy offered an alternative culture to which artists were able to turn for a radically different perception of the world and our place in it. Especially the summons to react to the purely materialistic progress of the sciences proved to be inspiring for artists.

To mark the international conference on Enchanted Modernities. Theosophy and the Arts in the Modern World, the EFM’s Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica Collection presented an exhibition of graphic art, books and art objects. The first part of this illustrated catalogue offers a survey of some of the theosophical and anthroposophical  works to have inspired modern abstract artists in the early 20th century. The second part focuses on “Aenigma”, an artists’ group founded in Munich in 1918. The “Aenigma” painters adopted elements from Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophical teachings.

Keywords: art and anthroposophy, art and theosophy.
