Postcard - ‘The Philosophers' stone is compared to coral’.

Emblem 32/50: The Philosophers’ Stone is compared to coral. Coral was regarded as a kind of plant which grows under water and solidifies when exposed to air. The alchemists call their stone ‘vegetable’ because it grows like a plant. Michael Maier (1568-1622) describes phases of the alchemical process in Atalanta fugiens, 1618. Engraving by Mattheus Merian sr (1593-1650), 8,5x9,5 cm | © EFM/Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica Collection
